Rugby did not exist anywhere between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains until 1964. In the fall of that year, George Bunting returned to study Law at the University of Kansas after having completed his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth.

George's first experience with Rugby occurred during his years of exile on the East Coast and he resolved to introduce the sport to the Jayhawks. To this end he advertised in the campus newspaper, "The Daily Kansan", and, in response, over twenty people gathered in a room that he had reserved in the Memorial Union Building. This was the first meeting of the Club.

Concurrent with the activities in Lawrence, Gerry Seymore, a British Expatriate, was assisting in the founding of the Kansas City RFC. So it was, there being but two teams in the whole region, that the Jayhawks and the KCRFC assembled in Kansas City for the match that initiated Rugby in the Heart of America. Those that recall the encounter suggest that the quality of play left much to be desired.

Ten Years later, Allen Chapman, a Cornwall expatriate, arrived in Lawrence and formalized the Club's operations. His lofty plans included constitutional organization, international Rugby tours and, ultimately, a clubhouse and playing fields.

Since that first season, the Kansas Jayhawks have slowly but surely matured. The KJRFC has now established for itself a permanent place among the array of local sports. Furthermore, the KJRFC is proud of the fact that it had joined an elite group of clubs in the United States to own and operate its own Rugby fields which we endearingly call Westwick. The Westwick Rugby & Athletic Complex, a 55 acre sports complex in located south of Lawrence in the scenic Wakarusa River Valley. We have been proud to host numerous clubs from across the country, and the world, at Westwick.

Rules and regulations

On behalf of the Kansas Rugby Foundation, Inc., I want to greet all members and friends of the Club as another fall season gets underway.   The purpose of our organization is to support the Club's operations and promote the sport of rugby. To the players, our most visible and meaningful activity is the development, management and maintenance of Westwick, the home of the Kansas Jayhawks RFC. Westwick opened in 1997 and has already received rave reviews as one of the finest rugby facilities in the United States. We are dedicated to a process of continuous improvement and want to make Westwick even more user-friendly. The lighted practice area is a recent example.

Since our new players will be making their Westwick debut in a few short weeks, this is a good time to review the rules and regulations that we have regarding use of the facility.

1.    Traffic and Parking

Do not park on the roadway. Parking is permitted in designated areas only. Cars should be parked in the gravel parking lot in neat rows. On game days, we often have large crowds and parking spaces are at a premium. Overflow parking is located north of the pond. Drive VERY SLOWLY, speed limit is 5 mph.

2.    Changing Rooms/Rest Rooms

Players wishing to change clothes for games or practices should do so in the second level of the barn. Don't drop your pants or walk around half naked on the touchlines -- we are dedicated to promoting a family atmosphere, not the rowdy environment you may have experienced at other rugby games or tournaments. What might be acceptable elsewhere is simply not allowed here. We have portable rest rooms -- use them! Don't drain your lizard in public.

3.    Conduct @ Matches

During games, only players and officials are permitted within the playing enclosure. All coaches, reserve players and spectators must remain well back from the touchlines. Don't wander around or warm up in the in-goal areas while a match is in progress. Practice good sportsmanship -- appreciate the efforts of all players and spectators. Help convey the message that rugby is a game for ladies and gentlemen. Foul language, violence and any other form of anti-social behavior are not tolerated at Westwick.

4.    Consumption of Beer/Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages may not be brought into the complex. Beer may be served only under the supervision of the Social Secretary at designated times and may be consumed only in the barn area, not on or near the playing fields. On these occasions, you are not allowed to drink unless you are 21 or older. On other occasions such as high school events and WRFU collegiate championship events, there will be absolutely no beer or other alcohol allowed. Rugby has a wonderful tradition of post-match hospitality and, on these occasions, the consumption of alcohol in moderation is a matter of personal choice. But please use good judgment and be pro active in the event you see any alcohol abuse or impairment.

5.    Dogs

Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times.

6.    Neighbors

Please be respectful of neighboring property owners. Be sensitive to the fact that we are playing rugby right next to their homes and their children.

7.    Trash

Do not leave trash, food, bottles, cans, clothing or other refuse lying around. Take pride in Westwick and help keep it looking clean and neat. Last season our teams did a wonderful job taking turns cleaning up after home matches.

8.    Friends, Family & Guests

You are responsible for seeing that any visitors you bring to Westwick observe these rules and regulations.

Please take a moment to remember that Westwick was made possible by the generosity and hard work of many people. Our alumni have been very supportive and made many sacrifices so that today's players can have the best possible environment in which to lean, play and enjoy rugby. This commitment by one generation to benefit those that follow is one of the distinctive features of the KJRFC and is something that is rarely found elsewhere. I hope your experiences as a member of this Club will motivate you to support the KRF and insure that KU remains at the top of US rugby at all levels.
