As we reach the home finale in year 59 of Jayhawk Rugby, we must announce the end of an epic era as Head Coach Andy Stewart and his family depart Lawrence at the beginning of May to start their new journey in Basel, Switzerland. It’s hard to put into words exactly what the Stewart Family has meant to this organization. If you have been around at all the last 7 years, you know just how much Andy loves this club and how hard he worked every single day to improve it. During his tenure, he not only had his hand in coaching, but the day-to-day operations of the club as well. The work he did brought this organization to new heights previously only dreamt about decades ago. The standards he implemented are everlasting and his fingerprints will forever be on this program. He is a model ambassador of the sport and a genuine example of the greatest core value in rugby; leave everything better than you found it. Andy literally gave blood, sweat & tears to this club including a very expensive ambulance uber one of the times he put on the crest.
Thank you to Ingrid, Henry & Willa for being so supportive of both Andy and the club, and for all the sacrifices your family has made the last 7 years. Time is the most valuable thing we own, and they gave up a lot of it with him for the sake of us. Andy is excited for the kids to experience Europe and different cultures. He will continue to pursue coaching there, though he hasn’t figured out at what capacity yet. Please join us at Westwick tomorrow for his last home game. The organization will be making an announcement soon about the next phase, but for now we wanted to give Andy his much deserved roses and give people a chance to say their goodbyes.
At the end of each game Andy would begin his post-match talk with the phrase “how good is this?” Win or loss, he always wanted us to be grateful for the opportunity to represent this club. Thank you, mate, for showing us just how good it could be.
