EXPLAINING A CHAMPIONSHIP – This coming weekend, we start a series of “Merit Table” matches against our college conference rivals. They are the matches on our schedule printed in white letters. Here is how we decide the champion of the conference:
The Heart of America conference has 8 college teams who all play each other in an official “Merit Table” match in a round-robin once a year. That makes incidental meetings other than the Merit Table match inconsequential.
To determine the league’s winner, they have adopted the world-wide rugby union’s “Bonus Point System” which is as follows:
4 points for winning a match
2 points for drawing a match
0 points for losing a match
1 losing bonus point for losing by 7 points (or fewer)
1 try bonus point for scoring 4 tries (or more)
-4 points deducted against a team that forfeits a match
In this system, winning teams get 4 or 5 points; drawing teams 2 or 3 points; and losing teams 0, 1, or 2 points.
Maximum points awarded in a win is 5 points.
So in our league of 8 teams, if a club won all 7 of their round-robin matches and scored 4 or more tries in each, they would get a maximum 7 x 5 points or 35 points. The team that gets closest to 35 points will therefore be the conference champion.
Periodically this fall we will post how the Jayhawks rank within the conference in match points results. We have strong rivals, so the November conference matches may decide a conference champion.
Cheer on the Jayhawks to… (A) win all their Merit Table matches, (B) score 4 or more tries in each match, and (C) beat all their opponents by more than 7 points.
