Final: Chico State wins 24-7

In second half. ..

5th minute - KU #8 senior captain RYAN RUSSELL picked off a Chico pass 30 meters out, buzz sawed through a couple of defenders and scored in a breakaway through uprights. Fullback SAM GASPAROVICH good on easy kick. SCORE 7-7

27th minute - Chico scored off rucks mid left. Kick good. SCORE 14-7 Chico

31st minute - Chico scrum half had ball from ruck on Jayhawk 15. He ducked into a tackle called "high" that looked worse than intended. Jayhawk tackler flyhalf JACK DIENST was then stomped by Chico hooker. Jack had a prior yellow card so was red carded off. Chico hooker also "given the hook". Jayhawks awarded penalty kick out of trouble. Remainder of game was 14 players a side.

36th minute - Chico kicked deep to Jayhawk 20 and recovered the ball. They took ball from ruck and soft kicked to right corner. A Jayhawk carried ball into goal and downed it. Chico won the 5 meter scrum and scored mid right. Hard kick was a low missile, but just good. SCORE 21-7 Chico..

At end of game Jayhawk flyhalf TRENT TAYRIEN kicked a loose ball on ground that went deep into Chico territory. The Chico fullback eluded pursuit and got a pass to a teammate who got to 10. Jayhawks laying on ball led to easy penalty kick in front of posts. FINAL SCORE 24-7 Chico.

This was a very close game and extraordinary given Jayhawks traveled with 20 players and met the top seed on their home turf. Chico had to change their game plan to cover an active Jayhawk backfield. Captain Russell's post game comment to team was that it was their 'best game".

Jayhawks play against either Western Washington or Long Beach tomorrow.
