Jayhawks Do It Again!
58-0 Merit Table victory over Oklahoma State AND win the Red Dirt Rugby Tournament, Saturday October 17 at Stillwater OK
KU is now 3-0 in national playoff qualifying Merit Table matches.
This young and determined team headed down to Stillwater Oklahoma to compete in the Red Dirt Rugby Tournament hosted by OSU. The Tournament consisted of teams including Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma University, Arkansas Gryphons, Tulsa Oklahoma, and the (undefeated) KU Jayhawks.
The first match of the tournament was at 11:00 am in beautiful weather conditions and mild wind gusts. The Jayhawks won a MERIT TABLE match against OSU with a blow-out win of 58-0. The Jayhawks quickly dominated the game by scoring two trys in the first 20 minutes. TOM WAKIM (Australian foreign exchange student) set the pace for the Jayhawks with a try, followed by a try by KU’s wing ARNOLD DINH, and a penalty kick by A.J. LAROCCA, a freshman legacy who's father AND grandfather played for past Jayhawk teams. LAROCCA was 5/7 for post-try kick conversions and 1/2 for penalty kicks.
The next match was played with high intensity against the Arkansas Gryphons. This was not a merit table match, but a vital win for the Jayhawks to advance in the tournament. The Arkansas Gryphons, from NW Arkansas, were founded in 2007 and the Jayhawks had never seen this club before. DYLAN FLOYD scored a try to tie the match 7-7 before half time. The Gryphons was ferocious and took a 12-7 lead on the Jayhawks in the 2nd half, but KU pulled through in the last few minutes of the game with a try from SAM TANNER, who also made a kick conversion that won the game for the Jayhawks 14-12. The Jayhawks then had a 4-hour break to catch their breath.
The last match was against Tulsa and was more aggressive than the others, since this was the finals of the Tournament. Both the Jayhawks and Tulsa were given a stern talk from the referee; asking for a clean game. Although Tulsa played with grit, they were no match for the Jayhawks. KU won the match 22-7. RYAN RUSSELL put the icing on the cake with an interception and 50-yard run for a try.
Next up for the Jayhawks is a “Border War” game next Saturday in Kansas City against Missouri. – Watch this Facebook page for time and place details. - Rugby games may be the last regularly scheduled sporting events between these two rival universities. – There are a lot of Jayhawk alumni in the Kansas City area.
