Jayhawks drop close match to University of Central Florida in National Quarterfinals

The playoff site host Jayhawks played the match on a sunny, mid 30’s day, that had an 8 MPH wind blowing out of the north. The Jayhawks had the wind at their backs in the first half.

4 minutes – UCF awarded a penalty kick 10 meters from Kansas’ goal line. UCF toed the ball and scored thru the upright. Easy conversion.

10 minutes – Jayhawk’s captain #8, RYAN RUSSELL broke through UCF and had a 45 meter run that scored mid-left of posts. (ARTICLE PHOTO) The conversion attempt by senior fullback JACK “MARTY” YOUNG was foiled when a gust of wind blew the ball off the tee while he was in his approach to kick.

25 minutes – UCF pounded the ball into a piledup ruck on the Kansas goal line, but couldn’t get the ball downed. The Jayhawks were awarded a penalty kick that allowed them to get the ball out of bounds up field.

30 minutes – UCF pounding the Kansas goal line. A 5 meter scrum was awarded UCF, who won that scrum and scored mid-right of posts. The UCF conversion attempt against the gusty wind was a line drive under the cross bar (missed).

35 minutes – Jayhawks were awarded a scrum near the UCF 22 meter line. UCF had a terrific hooker who won the ball “against the head”. UCF fed the ball to their wide left side and threw a skip pass out to their wing who ran along the sideline more than 60 meters down to near the Kansas goal line, where the Jayhawks managed a saving tackle. The ensuing play returned the ball to midfield.

37 minutes – RYAN RUSSELL kicked a punt deep from midfield and was then hit by UCF as he attempted to play the ball down field. That resulted in a penalty kick for the Jayhawks. Fullback JACK “MARTY” YOUNG punted with the wind and expertly found touch on the UCF 5 meter line. RYAN RUSSELL threw in to prop DELANIO FLOREZ who was wrapped up as he advanced a few steps and offloaded to RYAN RUSSELL in the gap by the sidelines. RUSSELL downed the ball in the left corner. YOUNG’s conversion from the sideline placement was wide.


5 minutes – UCF awarded a scrum 10 meters from the Kansas goal line. They won the scrum and scored through the posts. Easy conversion.

18 minutes – UCF won a Kansas scrum “against the head” 15 meters from the Kansas goal. UCF scored on a maul through the posts. Easy conversion.

23 minutes – Jayhawks awarded a penalty kick 10 meters from UCF’s goal. The Jayhawk hooker ANGELO PIZZO was passed the ball in a second phase and was able to squirm into the UCF goal and down the ball under UCF’s feet mid-right of posts. YOUNG’s conversion attempt was wide.

35 minutes – Jayhawks had the ball out of a ruck on UCF’s 40 meter line and passed the ball through their backs to their right. A UCF player intercepted a bad pass and sprinted to his left corner and then downed the ball under the posts. Easy conversion.

37 minutes – Jayhawks were attacking the UCF goal. A UCF player was penalty carded off for a dangerous pile drive tackle to RYAN RUSSELL. Kansas penalty kick from 10 meters out was fed to their big freshman prop/sub #8 CLAYTON GINTHER who did a solo-smash-collision try mid-right of posts. The Jayhawks conversion was attempted by freshman flyhalf SAM GASPAROVICH who had the distance but was wide.
SCORE 33-20

39 minutes – UCF awarded a penalty kick 30 meters out. They went for posts, but were wide.
