The KJRFC family would like to congratulate former Jayhawk captain Matt “Matty Ice” Harmon on being selected to the extended 41 man roster for USA Rugby as they prepare for their July test matches against England and Ireland. We are so incredibly proud of Matt, but this comes at no surprise as we’ve seen first hand why he would be a great individual to represent this country on and off the pitch.
As team captain, Matt excelled in just about every aspect of rugby. He was a great leader, worked hard every single day, and he was truly there for his mates beside him. A testament of all his hard work came to fruition when he won the prestigious Kernow Cup, which is voted on by the organization every year as the person who best exemplifies the high standards the KJRFC puts forth. Matt would go on to transfer to collegiate rugby powerhouse Life University, which hosts some of the best rugby players in the country as they continue their education. En route to being called up by USA Rugby, Matt has been playing professionally for Major League Rugby in New Orleans for the NOLA Gold. He joins several other MLR members as about 75% of the extended roster is made up from players in that league. This is a great sign of where the sport is at in this country.
We asked Matt just a few questions about his time in Lawrence. His favorite moment was winning the Red Dirt tournament down in Oklahoma his sophomore year. This moment meant a lot to him as it marked the first trophy his squad won since beginning his journey here. He went on to note that the social after that tournament was particularly memorable featuring some karaoke at the bar of the hotel they were staying at. Matt mentioned his favorite part about the club was always the socials after games. Whether it was at the rugby house on Louisiana or a bon fire out at Westwick, these were the moments that have stuck with him. He misses a lot of things, but what he misses the most is going to Johnny's Tavern in Lawrence any time (we’ve personally witnessed how much pizza this guy can put away and honestly, it’s somewhat disturbing). Along with Johnny’s, what he misses the most is hanging out in the clubhouse upstairs.
We wish Matt Harmon and the rest of the next crop of USA Eagles the best on this awesome chapter in their career!
